hi all, question....i have just bought an e4od trans with a BW1356 T case, on the tail output housing there is a port with a metal fork shape that`s got a bolt to obviously clamp something down, it has a small o ring in the centre, i have tried to find an online manual to find out what goes there, even though i found the manuals none of them showed that part, what it for?
What's supposed to go in there is from the speedometer a plastic tube with the wire, to a cylindrical gear made of plastic.
There's also another one inside the TC, made out of plastic, that one gets worn down on the inside of the case.
I tried to fix mine, and put a new external Speedo gear on it, but after a while it stopped working, because the inside one was already worn down.. more info than you requested, but that's what it is.
If you have it out, and easy to access, and, if want your Speedo to work, you could find a way to get in there and swap a fresh gear in before installing it, the gears'll probably be thrashed.
thanks for that guys, my truck is currently 2wd so were does my speedo cable run to at the moment? i`m doing a 2wd to 4wd swap so i take it once the swap is done i would have to use the port on the t case?

It should run to the transmission. On the 1356 the speedometer cable connects to the VSS, Vehicle Speed Sensor, and the VSS is held on there by the one bolt. The speedometer gear also attaches to the end of the VSS that is inserted into the t-case. The VSS is one of the critical sensors for the E4OD.

depends on what year truck you are playing with. 091 and older has a cable driven speedometer that goes into the tailshaft of the trans on 2wd or tailshaft of the T-case on 4x4. 92 and newer are electronic speedometer with no cable and use a VSS in the trans or on the rear axle.

ok right, so, the 4wd e4od and bw1356 transfer case i bought are from a 1993 truck, and mine is a 1990, does this mean i won`t be able to use the 93 parts?
hi all, after finding out the 93 e4od was a tad different to my 90 e4od i looking over the 1356 T Case (on the 93), i did manage to find the I.D tag that was swashed up under it, taking the numbers/letters off of it it read D263 which i found out would be the day/month/year and shift....but looking up for the info on it, it`s a bit contradicting from site to site, on one site it makes it....April 2nd 1986 shift 3, but another site states the 1356 was used from 87-95....so im a bit comfused on this, can anybody enlighten me what year it is?
My TC is a BW 1345 in my 86 truck. Was built 3-17-86. 87 was the first year for the 1356 as you say. It's possible they were building the 1356 in 1986 as they started installing them in 87 which is often in late 86 for the model switch over. I'm pretty sure the BW 1345 was cast into the case on mine. There was a clearly marked model number. Could have been a tag but I think cast in. On the rear side of the case if I recall.

thanks, yes, i see what your saying, i have that info on the case also, on one side of the case it has....1356-065-910 and on the other side it has....1356-039-908, and on the tag attached to the mounting bolt it has....D263, 1356-63, 356767, F2TA -AB (i think ab)...with the one i have being from 86 is a bonus as i can use my speedo cable on it?
