Hey all, I found a PTO at a garage sale that will bolt up to my 1994 e4od. Does anyone have experience with these? Is it just a undo the plate and bolt on or what else has to be done? Want to use it for a wrench if possible. Or if anyone has other uses or advice please tell. Thanks.
Interested in other's experiences as well. As far as I ever knew, it was a simple bolt-in-go as far as the actual gearbox was concerned. Obviously a whole 'nuther story on plumbing the driveshafts and/or hydraulic plumbing is concerned.
Is this unit you bought for a gear drive shaft, or a hydraulic pump? Or are they any different in that regard?
Actually, I was thinking manual transmissions or the transfer case. Can't say I've ever seen either on a newer truck anyway. Definitely never seen one attached to an automatic trans that I know of.
Yours is for the transfer case then? Or for the auto trans?
Oh ya, sorry it's on the transfer case. I found a Ford manual online, it was put on 350s with the snowplow package which mine has. So I assume it's for hydraulics. Still finding very little info on it. It's a Dana "Chelsea".

Reason: Add pics
The pics look worse than it is. There's really no rust or dirt in there. The oil is a little discolored. Wish someone that's used these could give me some info on them.
You will need an assortment of pto gaskets of different thickness to get it shimmed right and be quiet when engaged. A package of these gaskets are available in the heavy equipment stores. Nice find on the pto.
Thanks, the PTO came with all new gasket set and new bolts. All for 20$. I've been scouring the net for info on using it and think I want to use it for a winch setup. I'm still unclear on how to engage it with my automatic transmission.
Like mentioned above you need to shim with gaskets to get I'm guessing around .008 maybe plus minus .002 of play or backlash between the gears, too tight or too loose is bad and will mess things up.
You need to make sure that PTO is for your transfer case. They all look similar and can have wrong gears to mate up. Did it come off the same transfer case you have?

Agreed, you can NOT just go and bolt any pto on. They are SPECIFIC to each trans/transfercase, year, ratio etc.
As for using it for a winch, it is basically useless. You need to have the t-case in Neutral and the trans in gear for the PTO to be driven.. In a winch application, you WANT to have the truck assisting the winch
