POS Transfer Case Shift Motor Failures

A while back I had a transfer case shift motor fail on a 40k mile '22 F350 I had recently bought. after figuring out the problem I put a new one on and figured it was bad luck.

Yesterday morning 650 miles from home in a wet parking lot in Idaho Falls I was under '22 King Ranch I bought new with 29k miles now on it. I got the same see owners manual with a wrench notification and I could not get it to shift out of 4 wheel high . after trying everything I ended up pulling the motor off, clamping vice grips on the input shaft and duct taping them to the transfer case . fortunately I didn't need 4wd again and I made it home fine. another $200 motor is on the way.

There are both early '22 manufacture vehicles, I don't know if it was a bad run of parts at this time or if all of these motors are a POS, or maybe I have really bad luck. but if you have one either get familiar with how to jerry rig it to get where you're going or carry a spare.

Next time just pull and plug the vacuum hose feeding the front hubs. Instant 4x2 without dinking with the transfer case. Might make a little more noise but won’t get any driveline bind. Also much easier to restore 4x4 if needed.

Wouldn't selecting 2WD on the switch unlock the front hubs even if the transfer case motor was inop? A couple of tight turns would tell.

Do you engage 4wd often to keep the system (electric motor) from corroding and shorting out internally? Majority of owners haven't even played with 4 Low, ...4H only when needed, lack of use is the most common cause of failure.

The shift plate on the motor controls the hubs, since it was stuck in 4 wheel high the hubs remained engaged. the dash still says 4 wheel high too. I thought about pulling the vacuum lines and it should work, but it may cause more problems down the road than pulling the 4 bolts if you get leaks.

I use my 4wd quite a bit , I don't buy it as a visual accessory I need it. corrosion is not an issue on anything in the high desert the underside of my pickup looks like it came off the showroom floor for corrosion. the other '22 came out of northern CA so I don't know if 4wd was ever used, but in any case a dead shift motor on a 40k '22 and a 29k '22 cannot be written off as operator error.

That is interesting for sure,......... normally corrosion and lack of use cause death.

Maybe you use it too much?

I can't think of a time I've ever used four-wheel drive on a wet parking lot, hell, I use the snow plow in two-wheel drive most of the time

there's really no excuse for two failures on low mile late model pickups. I think the most likely cause is the motors are a POS. you shouldn't have to fret about whether it's worth the risk of shifting in or out of 4wd.

I hope they fixed the problem before my new ones were made. if not I may try an aftermarket one next time.
