electric 4x4

Just when I thought I had mastered the electric shift 4x4, another problem arises. It shifts to 4 hi and low fine, but it won't shift back to hi from low. It seems to be locking in at 4 low and then it won't move unless I take the shift motor off. Also, the shift motor goes from 2 hi to 4 hi to 4 low back to 4 hi and 2 hi if the motor is not attached to the transfer case. So, the problem is basically that the transfer case is hanging in 4 low. Any suggestions on what's wrong, aside from being electric and not manual???

Dallas , try this, shift your transfer case manually to all positions, to eliminate the transfer case. I know u have had alot of problems with the shift motor. I still think your shift motor may be hanging up or missing a position. Each position requires a certain ohmage .I dont have the paper work handy now but have u replaced your motor and does this motor when purchased have the worm gear included Will check later tomm night for your reply and have my paperwork that explains all about these shift motors.Few years ago i cleaned my motor(rebuilt)to find it still was shifting(out of position)TR

I feel certain that the transfer case is not the problem. I can shift it manually and it works fine. The motor also shifts fine, as long as it's not attached to the transfer case. When on the transfer case, it won't bring the transfer case out of 4 low. I have not replaced the motor, I just removed it and cleaned up the inside.

Ok Dallas, sorry it took so long to reply , as i was telling u the motor on your transfer case may be operating but the limit switches may not be engaged to where your motor just stays in that position on you pushed your 4x4 botton.Inside the motor/cam gear, there are limit switches, when u push your button to the position u want(4X4),something has to tell the motor cam which position to go into. The cam gear shuts off depending which position. 4x4 low theres a rubber stop in this gear that overtime gets brittle(it surrounds the metal stop. After finding good info i finally rebuilt mine taking all this cam / motor apart restoring it like new.To replace the stop i used a piece of 5/16 rubber hose.If u attempt to rebuild /clean let me know and this weekend will post the info i have .Good luck TR

I have taken my motor apart before but I'm not sure where the rubber stopper you are talking about is. Do you have any pics of where that is??

The motor turns the cam gear ,it will have to be taken apart , info i will include will have pictures and step by step instructions. This info was copied from here a few years back,it applied to explorer transfer case shifter motors, which are exactly the same shifter motors our broncoes have TR
