The first time I polished a lens is when a client of mine wanted to buy new headlights and I told her I am game to polish the old ones and see what happens. If I ruin them, I already got permission to buy new ones [the headlights were $1k each]. I started by wet sanding the yellow out. Started with 600 and worked my way to 2k. Then grabbed the polish on a buffer. Eventually worked my way till they looked new. Don't overheat the plastic.
The trick is to start with 600 grit. One thing you can do is sand down those alignment tips so the entire lens is flat. If your bracket is broken, it's a waste of time, but it might be a new skill.
