My truck is a 1997 F250 with an auto trans. It has 146000 miles. My overdrive shuts off by itself and takes numerous pushes on the button to turn back on .It does not blink like all the other posts I have seen about on this site. When I start the truck it is already shut off and I can't reset it till I start driving it. Then going down the road it shuts off again, over and over again. I am talking it will do that about 10-12 times in about 10 miles. I have had it in a shop 3 times (not a dealer) for this and they replaced some type of module in the steering column. But it still does it. any help would be appreciated. By the way it is in the shop now and he can't figure it out. It's been there for 3 weeks.
Take the cover off the steering column. Inspect the wires where they enter the shift handle. Most likely, one or more has a spot where the insulation has been worn off and the wires are shorting, causing your issue.
The shop that has my truck already replaced that part and this is the third time it has been in for this. I will update when I get the truck back and I get it fixed.
I should have been more clear about the wiring. They replaced a switch in the steering column. I never saw it so I don't know if the wires from the shift handle plug into or not, but I assume that to be the case.
Thank you everyone for your input and suggestions.
So they replaced the OD OFF switch, which almost never fails.
Remove the cover from the steering column. Inspect the wires where they plug into the shift handle. It's a common occurrence for these wires to wear through the insulation and short circuit. This will cause the OD OFF to come on at random times.
This happened to me and I replaced the handle and switch, to no avail. I sent my PCM to Diesel Technologies of Chattanooga and they sent me a rebuilt one that corrected the problem. Just a thought.
