I've got the cab off of my frame right now, and I've got a leak at one of the shift rods on the transfer case. I'd like to change the seals on them while the cab is off and it's easy to get to without having to remove the t-case. I've tried to find an instance of someone replacing those seals without removing the shift arms but haven't been able to. Has anyone done that?
What else would you recommend I do to it while the cab is off?
Nothing special to do while cab is off other than restore the frame and underside of the cab. I think it might be easier to replace seals with transfer case separated from the transmission. Everything else under there is meant to be serviced without removing the cab.
you should have no problem changing output seals with case installed. I don't know what year or model you are working with. If you have a divorced case then the input should be easy to change. If it is a married case then the case must be removed from the trans to replace the input seal.
I don't believe OP is talking about output seals (or input seals). He is talking about the seals on the shift rails.
My answer is, I don't know if you can do it without removing the shift rails from the case. it seems like it would be quite difficult, especially under the truck.
Someone has had to have tried before. Maybe if you put a couple little screws in the seal, you could pry it out of there? Driving a new one in, just need a PVC or pipe that fits the seal and fits over the rail. Ensure there are no sharp burrs on the end of the shift rail.
