and yet GM has announced that they will no longer support Android Auto or Apple Carplay. Seems like that might be a popular choice (not!).

They are going to regret that move. The youth (under 40s) absolutely will not accept that. IMO, it's a move and trend to everything becoming ale carte, includin options in cars.

Vehicle manufacturers collect massive amounts of data via the navigation systems. That data has value, and is sold to insurance companies, marketing firms, etc.

I thought it was a bad thing my XL came with no navigation. I was forced to buy a Garmin with free updates for life..

Despite the value, they still see fit to charge for it. It might be simpler and more profitable to make a deal with the big G to trade info for tech or something.

The most simple thing to offer would be an infotainment system that is more or less a basic AM/FM radio, and has a screen that is compatible with either Apple or Android. Then the owner could mirror their phone to the screen and operate it as they desire.

Ford could offer an app for owners to access all kinds of info on their vehicles, if the owner wants. There would be no need for navigation, or all of the other glitchy proprietary software that auto manufacturers try to devise to get your attention, then change it all around with each update. But, there’s no money in that.

Late model vehicles have become too reliant on electronics, just for basic functions. Simplifying what is controlled via CANbus, rather than running more and more through it, would go a long way towards reliability. One of the leading causes of warranty complaints for auto manufacturers these days is electronic and infotainment related. You can only put so much demand on a 12 volt system.

I can't really argue with that, but my thought would be to have a version of Android or IOS actually running as the vehicle's infotainment system. Both OSs are essentially Linux. Android would be less expensive because Apple's pound of flesh is apparently more expensive to produce, but I digress. I thought I read somewhere about some vehicle makers actually using android as the basis.

All vehicles should switch to 48V anyway. Higher voltage = lower current = smaller wires = less expensive.

It seems like the auto companies are going in the wrong direction. GM is removing Apple and Android capabilities from some of their vehicles. I've also noticed that the majority, but not all, of the EV's on the market do not support Apple or Android as well.

The question to ask is why?
A possible answer is the cost of licensing fees that have to be paid to Apple and Google for each and every vehicle built with that capability whether or not its ever used by the owner.

Profits are Job One!

On my previous truck my ancient phone became incompatible with Sync 3 since the version of Android couldn't be upgraded. No problem. Stick the phone in a holder, plug the cable in to keep it charged and Google Maps worked perfectly just from the phone and as a side benefit I could keep the entertainment screen up on the Sync screen. The phone and message features still worked thru Sync via Bluetooth.

Google maps will not work with sync 2, sync 3 or newer.

With Sync-2 you are outa luck, but if you can install Sync-3 (version 2 or newer) you can get Android Auto and/or Carplay to work.

It depends on the year. I know our 2015 can not get it, but your 2016 "might". Sorry, I do not know when Sync-3 came out.
