I have a nav system question on how to get the system to use specific roads. For example, you know highway X is the most direct route, but it's under construction and very slow. So, you want to take highway Y. But the nav system keeps trying to force you to use X.
I've tried putting in waypoints of cities, but that's a mess 'cause it keeps taking me off Y into town. Which is OK if you know where you are, but if not, you get badly sidetracked. Again, not a big problem if there's a person in the passenger seat, but it's more problematic if you're in unfamiliar areas, traveling alone, at night, and so on.
So, how DO I get the system to use the road(s) I want it to use?
I've only used my nav system once, but isn't there an option to have it avoid construction (i know that's not exactly what you're looking for)? Another method may be to get on the road you want, and then tell the nav that that's your new starting point.
I pretty much use the in-vehicle nav system for the final few miles, to find the individual street turns and the final destination. Other than that, I use the phone, or at least know the route I want to take to get to the point where the vehicle nav is useful. Way overpriced feature, they should have support to hook in phone nav. $150 to update the maps? Crazy.
Google maps is your best bet as it's updated constantly with data from other users. OEM Navigation is nice to have because the compass ball alone looks pretty silly in that quadrant but it can't compete with google maps or Waze.
Simple answer, begin using the route you want and the system will recalculate. It may do that several times but you can turn off the voice until you get close to your destination.
I believe my Ford touch sync 2 allows you to avoid roads. Put in the destination, click "set as destination," so it calculates the route. Then hit the Dest. button in the top right. Edit the route (perhaps via "show/edit route" or some similar option. It should show all the turns with an "avoid" option for each. I have not tried this so I can't vouch for its efficacy. This won't allow you to CHOOSE roads but it will allow you to avoid some.
HTH.

The 5 year sirius travel service that Ford gives you for free will update your route if there is an accident or construction or slow down. It will not automatically do it when first programming the route but will update as you drive.
There are a few settings in nav to designate the route type you want to take. That interfaced with the sirius travel can get you there with minimal problems.
Also, once you program a route, you can take a different route and let the nav update as you drive. Ignore the make uturns and other commands to get you back onto the original route. I do this all the time. My main concern is the final destination....not the route in between if i am not following the main course from the nav.
Even your older garmin and tom tom can not predict what you are wanting.
Sounds like I'll need to do some more fiddling... It just seems extremely bizarre to have to use a tiny cell phone to do routing when there's a nav system sitting there...
It also seems like a bad idea to be chewing up Verizon's ridiculously overpriced data when there's a nav system sitting there... BUT, it is what it is. I'll have to play some more once the truck comes back!
Well they have a new unlimited data plan. Not that great if you have more than one line on the plan though.
Also, don't you need a subscription to Sirius travel link to get construction info? There's no guarantee that's as accurate as google maps or Waze.
I'll agree with you, itd be easier/nicer to use the built-in stuff but with no way for live updates or even a way for users to contribute info, it kind of sucks and is basically a money-making gimmick.

No, you are given 5 years free of the Sirius Travel Link with the purchase of the truck.

Yes, Verizon does... And it's only $80 month per line so that whether your have 2 lines or 4, they're gonna collect $160/month whether you use 1GB or 20. I'd happily switch to a far more reasonably priced alternative but in the past we had T-Mobile AND Sprint and the coverage from EITHER was virtually non-existent in the vast majority of places we were.
I don't like Verizon, but at least it works. Now if they'd just recognize that their service is a commodity and significantly reduce the price!
