manually turning engine

Wish to turn the crank of mine F1 49 engine 226 to adjust valves but do not know the measure of the pulley bolt to fix a socket. Hard to enter with hand/view the bolt with radiator in place.Somebody knows?

Hardwork when radiator is in place, ,Further most of our sockets are in mm.. I was told that maybe a 7/8" socket, I bought one but it did not fit and I could not see why.

You might try a 24mm socket. That's really close to 15/16, which is a common Ford crank bolt size on later engines. It could be that on your 226, as well. If you have a little mirror, that might help you see inside the pulley. If that doesn't work, try your different metric sockets until you find the ones that are too big and too small until you get it close. If they're too sloppy to use, let us know what you find and we can help you convert the size to fraction.

I set the valves in my 226 a little over a week ago. I used a socket with a couple of extensions to go through the crank hole in the bottom grill bar. Unfortunately, I don't remember the size socket but I think it was 7/8". I had no problem accessing the crank bolt to fit the socket. I had to install the socket by itself on the bolt and then insert the needed lengths of extensions so I could plug in my 1/2" drive racket. It was easy.

If the engine has the provision for hand cranking, a deep socket is required.

I got it: 1" or 25,2mm socket for the hand cranked nut.

Thanks to all,
- Keep dreaming on find a hand crank to use my original nut when battery is down or motor starter brokes.
