I'd do an h13 bulb conversion regardless of if you stay halogen or go LED.

For the H13 conversion you either need a conversion pigtail harness (see link to Riffraffdiesel below, knockoffs can also be found on Amazon), or go to the salvage yards, cut some headlight connectors off a junker and do a little wiring.

As for bulbs , I've tried a lot of different LED H13's (every bulb purchased off amazon was terrible). I've since found a settled on these from DieselSite (link below). I have them in literally everything I own that'll take them, even my youngest son's retired crown vic police car that he drives to high school has them. IMHO, they're hard to beat , especially for the relativity low price.

If you’re a little ambitious you can do what I did and go H1 projector retrofit. I’m telling you right now, there’s not much that’s going to beat them. I did this pretty cheap and they are holding up great, and super bright. See link below.

I personally like the look of the pre 05 headlight housings and wanted to stick to a 9007 Bulb Form Factor.

I just purchased the following (I haven't installed it yet, but have heard good things on the site)

Upgraded wiring harness
https://www.ebay.com/itm/133129054056

High Wattage Halogen Hella 80/100W Bulbs (Stock is 55/65W for reference)
https://www.ebay.com/itm/364874357854

I've tried:
1) LED Replacement Bulbs (2 or 3 different manufacturers) - Poor fitment and light output is not optimized in a reflector housing made for a halogen
2) HID Projectors (DIY Kit) - Light output was good, but constantly adjusting the cutoff so I could actually see down the road without getting flashed by on-coming drivers was annoying. I gave up with trying to adjust to make both parties happy.

The trick in projectors is making sure the cut off is level since the shutters have a built in cut out for oncoming drivers. If adjusted with a 2” drop at 25’ they are 100% correct. I rarely get flashed with mine, and will ignore them if it’s just a flash. My mustang, venza, and Audi all have stock projectors though not quite as bright as the H1 bulbs in my project for the ‘05 SD.

Good luck with your build.
