Shift collar broke while on highway.

So truck has been driving great. The other day I was driving from work. And I’m going into a curve and I notice I don’t have great control over the wheel. I have enough to pull off the road and I try to put her in park to turn it off and the column shifter is all over the place. I don’t have to pull it towards me to move it. And the piece that has the turn signal is turning with the steering wheel. So I get her home and check things out I see I need a new rag joint coupler. That’s what made me loose control. While stopping I may have used a little too much force on the wheel and shifter. I pulled the steering wheel off and the bowl. But I can’t figure out what exactly is broken in there. What do I need to replace? 1975 f150 Ranger,390 motor, 2wd. Thanks for any advice. Any recommendations on where to buy the parts?

Mine on my '77 broke a dozen or so years ago, it took me a long afternoon, I made a thread here at Fix Shift Collar but broke neu/rev switch tab! - Ford Truck Enthusiasts Forums . I know it's titled shift collar, but by time I posted I had it back together. Mine was broke / bad cracked there where is a crease, one side was cracked, other side was broke, but by time I got it apart it was broke so that the lever did not turn the inner shift tube. It was obvious in my case.

Thanks for the quick response. I hate driving my wife’s car. I feel like a circus bear in it. So do you think I just need a new collar? I just can’t see where the shifter engages or locks into the column to shift the transmission. Thanks again.

Was there a long curved plate with two screws that had indentions where the lever engaged to hold in a position like 123NRP ? It's a vague memory, but I wonder if yours didn't just totally come loose?

I remember something like that, my screws had loosened, but my collar was broke too. I don't have pictures, but were you still able to shift? Did that piece that holds the switches have two bolts with square nuts? I wish I had pictures, I was just finding my way, but the part holding my turn signal switch didn't turn that I recall.

If your shift collar ain't broke, you don't likely need a new one.

The only things I got is what’s pictured. And none look broken. Worn, yes, but not broken. I think you might be right though. I do remember hearing something falling down the pipe as I was pulling over. And on the bottom of the collar there is a piece that comes out when you depress the shifter. Any idea what that piece that broke off is called. Maybe that’s all I need.

There is a "detent plate" that is the long curved piece, the two screws .... and the collar has the lever, a roll pin, and a rubber trim piece.

If you have a long skinny magnet on extending wand, might "fish" for parts? I don't recall any other pieces. If I find a pic I'll post it. Without the curved plate, you will not any "positions", you can see the teeth on the lever that engage it.

One thing about it, once you do this, it'll change how you treat the lever, it did me.

When the shift collar cracked in my '73 F100, I bought a replacement from LMC Truck. Works fine.

Looks like a 1968-1972 bump side steering wheel, the indicator light in a hood is a little different, but yes ....

On the back side of the flange piece above the shift collar across from the turn signal lever, #7A216 .... they called it an "insert". Located in the right place where yours just had two worn screw holes (see post #4 above). I saw I did mention mine being loose long ago, pretty sure that I Loctite-ed the two screws too.

I put a magnet down the pipe and found this. Now just gotta find the piece online. Looks like you were right. Thanks for the help.
