Distributor & Ignition Questions

Hello,

Now that I was able to make my new Tach work, I figured I would move on to the ignition system. I have a 1997 F250 7.5 Cal MAF truck which is bone stock...next year hopefully I will be putting in a cam, but for now I figured I would upgrade the ignition system with an MSD system...question I have is, is it worth it to do an MSD Cap, rotor & coil? Brand new all three can be had for like $150 right now...should I also add a like a 6A or 6AL ignition box? Any thoughts would be great.

thanks,
Jim

The MSD stuff may or may not do anything you can feel from the drivers seat. I put an MSD coil in one of my trucks and got a slightly smoother idle but these factory coils are powerful enough to produce arcing from the plug wires and boots to metal engine components if those parts are compromised or simply routed to close, so I'd attribute that particular "improvement" experience to a weak or compromised OEM coil. As usual your milage will vary.

I'm also not sure an MSD ignition box is adding anything but another point of failure, I'm sure in an extreme high performance application multiple sparks can aid combustion but these truck motors are far from being in thsat category. The other thing to consider is that the MSD products you buy today are very likely made in china which brings with it the quality/durability question.

An MSD ignition describes it's self as "multiple spark discharge".

Which is a function of coil saturation, which is done by the eec-IV computer.

You can't stack it on top of the factory computer.

Their cap/rotors are brass terminals, generally good quality & longer lasting as well as at a price point comparable to overpriced Motorcraft stuff.
