Pimpx and knock sensor

So I'm realizing the stock knock sensor on my 1992 F-150 302 will not work with Pimpx...is this correct? The block I used on my rebuild is not drilled and tapped for the knock sensor so that will need to be done now before the engine is installed. Do I need it? Are there better aftermarket options that will work with Pimpx?

Did they even have knock sensors before 1998?

Yes my 1992 block has one. The 1987 crown Vic block I used for a 347 stroker build is not drilled and tapped for one.

Ford started putting knock sensors in Windsor blocks in 1986

I confirmed with Stinger that the factory knock sensor will not work. For those that have used the pimpx ECU, is a knock sensor necessary?

Is insurance necessary? No, but it's nice to have in case there is a problem.

Well, the knock sensor is just there in case you get a tank of **** poor gas
Then the timing gets reduced as you run the stuff through
Around here, crappy gas is so prevalent, people go up to the ski resorts in the winter and the processor will reduce the timing so much that the vehicle will not make it to the top of the mountain
On my suggestion
They shut the vehicle off and restart it, then make it the rest of the way up
Happens all the time
UT gas is 85 octane
They figure we can have **** poor gas due to our altitude and be okay
So, we get 85, 87 and 89
Around here knock sensors have use for street driving'
I know current I/M testers that swear Maverik gas will not pass I/M

The mega-squirt system based pimpx is configurable to use a knock sensor.

If they say a Ford sensor is not compatible, OK.

Ask what GM or other style they recommend.

I have had no issues without knock control. I don’t think you’ll get huge gains by running timing to the ragged edge so just run a conservative table. The best of course is Dyno tuning it. I took a few degrees off the base table from Stinger and run 89 with no problem towing heavy. I had some interest in making one of those cheap headphone detonation listeners but never got to it.

This truck is going to be used for on and off road normal truck things so no need to be aggressive on the table. However, I don't want to omit the sensor and find out later it was beneficial, especially if for whatever reason I had to go back to a stock ECU. Would mean pulling the engine to drill and tap the hole for it on my block. I'm leaning towards having it installed just in case, but if theres an aftermarket option that will work with Pimpx/megasquirt, it would be nice to gain the functionality. I have a post on Stinger's support forum asking about other compatible sensors as suggested above, still waiting to hear back.

Reply from Stinger:

"You don't need a knock sensor. We have thousands of customers not running a knock sensor, many of them running 15+ psi of boost and some of them running over 30psi of boost and some making over 1000 hp, all without a knock sensor. You're running a little cam and no boost on a low compression engine which means you REALLY don't need a knock sensor"

Glad they responded back to your question. Sounds like you don’t need to worry about it.

The knock sensor programming in the Ford PCM doesn't have much effect, it certainly doesn't pull enough timing to prevent detonation which in examples I personally encountered only required a couple degrees of retard to quell. So yeah your motor is in no real danger from not utilizing one, no more than the millions of these motors that ran hundreds of thousands of miles without one.

Would not worry with it, there's no telling how many 351w, that dont have a knock sensor(my 95 didn't come with one), but the 302 does, if it was needed...Ford would put on all motors.

I believe all 351w did not have knock sensor. False knocks detected and the programming in the EEC-IV does not work well.

Run 87+, don't max timing, good to go without it.

Before you install the engine, drill and tap, then if you really want it, you can.
