Have a 68 bronco project and I think it has the original engine but I would like to confirm that. The casting numbers on the block are 0 C5AE-6015E with a smaller 6L8 above. Does the 6L8 mean 68, if so what would the L stand for. I looked at a chart that was posted here a while ago and my numbers are real close but not on the chart exactly THANKS
Thats the chart I went to before so Im sure its a 289 but what about the year, can that be determined from these #'s. Also the 289HP says orange color code at rear of block, does that have anything to do with the O in front of my #. One more thing is the 65AE on my block dosn't have -E after it like the chart but it does end with 6O15E. (O C5AE- 6015E) Thanks again
Your engine is date coded 6L8 which decodes to 6=1966, L=November, 8=8th day of month....so the block was cast on November 8th, 1966 using the C5AE-6015E block revision. FYI, many early 68 model vehicles could have had a late year 66 engine that was completed in 67. The date of the heads will add information as well.
Also a C5AE 6015E HIPO is the same exact block with only add-on parts that made it a HIPO, such as larger Main Caps, Rods with 3/8" rod bolts, larger balancer, etc. You could check the heads for the 'cupped' springs which identify HIPO heads as well.
