Found this oil soaked canister thing while doing my brakes. 04 f350, this is on the passenger side, I was hoping to figure out what it was and if I should give it some immidiste attention. I’m new to diesels
It's a clear sign that you have a lot to learn about your new truck.
Plenty of material on this site and others, YouTube, too. Just be careful of info from the Facebook sites, as only about 1/3 what you’ll be told is correct.
It might be a trans fluid leak, but with a lot of dirt.
Note to OP: If you try to take off the cover with a hand wrench, you may bend the bracket, or worse, break off the hex at the bottom. The best way to remove them is with an impact wrench and a 6-point socket.
Probably so. Once I had a somewhat significant leak there after a filter change, and it does collect dirt quickly. That said, I could always see a bit of red in the fluid (hanging drop, etc). Mine never got that dirty though!
With that looking so bad, I am thinking we might also see an aftermarket oil filter in the engine compartment. Not necessarily related to the leak, but related to the lack of quality care and knowledge in general.
OP, multiple pictures of the top of the engine bay would help us make some recommendations to you. Mark has several informative bulletins located in the tech area that you should review. Mark types, I do videos.
You need a good scan tool that can read engine/transmission (PCM) PIDs. Then drive it and get it completely warmed up. Monitor EOT (oil temp) and ECT (coolant temp), and see how far apart that they get - especially when working the engine a bit. This is a quick test used in assessing the health of the oil cooler.
