What kinds of ignitions, coils, dizzys exc.. are y'all running in your slicks w/ FE engines? What types fit, or should I say work. Which ones work the best. Maybe a comparison of the different products and their results, like mileage, responce, added horsepower and such. Compare prices to results and satisfaction.
Can't go wrong with one engineered by Ford to run that engine, The Duraspark II! Ford put them in 75-76 360's and 390's. No points to burn out and a nice hot spark to help fire any fuel. There are instructions here (FTE tech articles) to help you wire it in. You will need the distributor and the control module (brain box).
There are also several aftermarket systems available, e.g. Pertronix, Mallory. I will let someone that knows more about those chime in here.
Thanks for the rply. I wasn't sure if ford made anything like that that would work on these engines. That will probably save me a few dollars down the road.
Anyone else have any replies?
Being a performance oriented Ford fan I think anything can be improved! I run a Pertronix Ignitor in a well set-up point type dizzy to fire a MSD 6A box. If you have a Duraspark dizzy simply run the output into a MSD, Crane, Holley, etc. multiple spark discharge ignition and you are good to go. The improved idle, response, and starting ease will convince you it was a good choice!!
Factory Duraspark distrbutor fired directly by MSD 6A eliminating the factory module works great! I did it on the 390 in my '66 and the 351W that replaced it also. Put the same set up on my Bobcat S/W 302 too. You get the "pump gas friendly" stock advance distributor with the fire of MSD. I always use the MSD coil that is recommended by MSD too. Vast improvement over points.
I run the MSD stuff as well. Haven't quite figured out the adjustable timing springs inside the distributor yet so if yall know how to adjust it would help. Engine is a 390 w/ 428 crank, 10.2-1 comp., Cam Holley 750, and Headers. Heads had some work but don't remember the specifics.
