2001 E450 class C V10...Starter is going out. Been looking at different starters. Many brands, and you have your standard, supreme, professional, gold, silver, new, reman, etc. Any recommendations? What seems to work for you guys? Thanks!
Looks like rockauto has some nice brands, I think I'd get mid-high grade for a v-10.
My van's got smaller engine and starter is very easy to change tho. So if it's the same for you, maybe a cheaper one that's easy to return is a good option.
In your case, I would get one from the Ford dealer
Cheap China drives ruin flex plated and ring gears
I need to help a guy replace his flex plate next week on a 2013 F150 6.2 gas (bummer)
I have been through many starters over the years. I have found, based on how much of a PIA it is to change,a new Ford starter is the way to go. The extra cost is worth having to do it twice.
Other than an OEM brand part I'd settle for nothing less than an NAPA top-tier part as they come with a life-time warranty, Sure they're a bit more up front but knowing it'll last a long time is worth the extra dollars, IMHO.
I am finding our auto parts are similar to packaged food: "assembled in USA of Global components."
The Chinese have our number: those American's will buy anything.
They have the ability to make a superior part and assembly, but they know we'll buy it Sub-Standard in desperation.
So, back in 202? or earlier, I changed out the starter in my '77 AMC jeep 304 engine.
The jeep gets driven once annually for a jeeper event, then it sleeps again.
So, I goes out in mid-May to fire it up and got just a dull-click. Well, from past experiences working on Fords,
normally, the "Dull-Click" is one of two things. `1. bad grounds or connection, or 2. fritzed Starter
I pull the starter and lay it on the floor and hook jumpers to it. _ _ _ Nothing.
Next, I turn the armature with the bendix approx 1/2 revolution, and when hooking the humpers to it, it spun like it should.
The curse of vehicles SELDOM DRIVEN. Things get Fritzed..
I've never driven a vehicle with the V-10.
But I drove a '71 Mopar industrial 413 in a class A motorhome for 27-years and liked that reliable engine.
I feel your pain
I replace starters constantly
Had to put 3 starters on a 1990 Corvette in 2 years
One was even a new AC Delco that failed
Even the GM ones have cheap China drive gears
The original starter spins, starts, works fine most of the time. Trouble began with an occasional click, then start. Progressively went to more clicks, then turn over and start fine. Last start, click click for about 5 minutes before starting. I'm kinda leaning towards cable at starter connection or solenoid. In any case, the hardest part of the whole deal is getting the heavy beast off the ground high enough to work on it. 31 ft class c. The thing is 150 miles from home so I have to make sure I have everything I could possibly need.
P.S. Ford dealer over the counter Motorcraft starters are not the same quality as original assembly line starters.
