GPS/Phone Mount

New member here and new Super Duty owner. This modification may have already been done. Wanted to see if I could mount a Garmin GPS & Smartphone where the headrest is located on XL models. Found a tray on Amazon that mounts in the center headrest location. I needed a tray between the bucket seats on my 2003 Tacoma, so the plastic XL tray fit nicely between the Tacoma seats and the tray tube mount for the XL works with fine with RAM GPS & Phone mounts. The tube is only 1/2" diameter, so I had to use 1/4" neoprene clamped between the RAM mount and tube to get a tight clamp fit. Had to cut 1 1/4" off of both tube mount rods to get the components to fit closely to the cushion/arm rest. Also cut new notches in the tube mount to lock the tube in place.

I can still reach the radio & temperature controls OK.

Question, when using the 12V power supply below the GPS, will the 12V power eventually turn off or is there a setting that needs to be reset so it will power down when the truck is shut down with the GPS power plug plugged in?

Since I'm new here and still learning the rules, I have not posted the Amazon links for the parts yet, but I can if needed.

Please do! I have this issue on my 2022 F550 work truck, been debating about the best way to utilize it, been tempted to just build/weld something together to attach to it. My big issue is I have a Ram computer mount so it limits the R side usage.

The link would not work right for this one, it's the ball that plugs into the back of Garmin GPS, 25mm (RAM 1") ball to 17mm ball (Garmin) with RAM double ball clamp that's 2.4" long, hope that makes sense

Are you asking about the 12v power port on the dash? I believe it shuts down with ignition.

Yes, maybe I'm not waiting long enough, will test it some more.

Thanks,

That is a neat setup. I had not seen that headrest mount yet. Thanks for posting.

Since there will only be two of us in the front seat, decided to use the area where the center headrest goes, started searching on line an found a tray that replaces the headrest, so I used the tray elsewhere mounting the GPS/Iphone and it worked out, got lucky on that idea.

Thanks,

I use the RAM mount for my boat's GPS and I have been happy with it. That said, it's big and bulky However, whatever you get, remember that cheap is just that. Lots of time they will have sway, which can flex the mounting points and cause problems over time, or they just don't put it where you need. Ideally, you want your nav at close to eye level where you can see it and still see the road. putting it way down below the level of the dash means taking your eyes off the road, which is never a good way to do things.

You may need to also open the door after turning off the to see the power turn off, or wait several minutes. I'm not sure if they're timed the same way the radio is or not.
