Random Check Engine Light?

Hi everyone, while towing my 9500lb camper home today about half way there, I noticed the check engine light on. Of course I was very concerned about getting home but the truck never missed a beat, running perfectly. The CEL stayed on the rest of the way. Parked the truck and unloaded it. About 45 minutes later, started the truck and the CEL was gone without me doing anything. Truck is a '17 F-250 with the 6.2L and has 76K. I decided to scan for codes anyway and got the dreaded P0300 cylinder misfire. I've read a few threads on the subject and I'm still somewhat confused on how to handle this if it reoccurs. A main factor seems to be a coil boot arching to the block? Should I be able to see this happening? Are people just replacing the boot? It seems there are springs and other things in there. Thanks for any insight on this subject. I was not expecting this to happen as the truck has been flawless since new.

Welcome to the club. 2017 6.2 F250. Original owner. Started getting P0300 at 55k miles. Now at 83k miles. Each time it comes on, I clear it until it comes back on and I get the associated cylinder code P0301, P0302…..etc, if it’s not originally indicated with the P0300. Then you can pull the coil, clean out the corrosion, and change plugs if needed.

I’ve been through all 8 cylinders with a misfire code. I’ve replaced 4 of the coils. A good cleaning took care of the other ones. Even with all these codes, I’ve never actually had any hesitation or felt a misfire.

My buddy just went through this on his 2017 6.2, his intake manifold was cracked and had to be replaced. He had all 16 plugs and coils done at the same time in addition to a few other things. He was shocked as to the power that was left on the table due to the issues.

First, thanks for the responses. If I decide to change out all 8 coils, would these be the ones I need? On the Ford parts site, these Motorcraft coils are $165 ea. On E-bay, it seems I can get all 8 Motorcraft coils for $239. Part numbers match up for right and left side. Price seems almost to good to be true. I would also need the boots, correct? One other question, would the right/left side be from sitting in the cab or facing the engine? https://www.ebay.com/itm/177244328393?var=0&mkevt=1&mkcid=1&mkrid=711-53200-19255-0&campid=5338590836&toolid=10044&loc_physical_ms=9 1932&customid=a7d26fde39c61e902eb2077d7e3bff1c&gcl id=a7d26fde39c61e902eb2077d7e3bff1c

The ebay link you shared is/are knock-off coils.
2nd pic shows Motorcraft blurred out.
Remaining pics show it from back of package.
Are they OEM or knockoff? Too much risk in my mind.

You're probably right but they sure do look official but the price gives it away. At that price though, it might be worth taking a chance. Here's how I'm going to proceed for now. Since the CEL went off by itself, I'm still going to clear the code. Then I'm going to start the truck and see if I can detect any kind of arching whatsoever. Hell, I might just start touching stuff and see if I get a little jolt, lol. Then a lengthy test drive to see if the CEL comes back on. If it does, I'll pull a coil and see what condition it's in plus inspect the boots as well. It's my understanding that the boots can go bad but the coils can still be good. We'll see I guess.

Rockauto does list Motorcraft coils for $90 ea.
DG525/DG526 $88.79

I would identify which cylinder is showing the misfire. Swap a coil from the same cylinder bank and see if the misfire follows. Then change coils or plugs from that point.
The pictures appear to have the boot already installed.

Was gonna say, you're better off buying them off of Rockauto. You get Genuine Motorcraft parts at a fraction of the price.

Good idea and thanks. Hopefully my scanner will be able to identify that.

Agreed. Prices are all over the place. One video highly recommended a kit from TRQ. Another went with MSD coils, NGK Iridium plugs and wires. Both videos recommended not rebuilding the boots as they can easily break. My local Ford dealer quoted me $2700 for the job and after watching some videos I can see why. I'll proceed with caution, lol. https://www.holley.com/brands/msd/pl...gnition_coils/

I honestly don't know if the 6.2 is 1 or 2 coils per cylinder.
But 8 coils and 16 plugs is just shy of $800 + shipping on Rockauto. Find a 5% off code and away you go.

Now I'm completely confused. As my original post stated, my ECM threw a P0300 code while I was towing my camper home. 45 minutes later the CEL disappeared without me doing anything. Yesterday I took the truck out for a drive fully expecting the CEL to return. The trip was around 200 miles with varying speeds up to 80mph. The CEL never came back on and she was purring like a kitten. I'm curious as to what caused the CEL while towing albeit the engine was under a lot more stress and RPM's. Not sure what to do now. I'd hate to spend $850 on new coils and plugs but I will if need be. It is my understanding that coils are either good or bad with no in between. Is this correct? Other causes could possibly fouled plugs, bad gas, bad plug wires, bad valve? You'd think any of these would cause a CEL while under normal operating conditions though. My scanner will not tell me what cylinder misfired as the P0300 code states multiple cylinder misfires. So, while towing the engine is under maximum duress and throws a CEL. Not towing no CEL. Would anyone have any idea why this happened and what would you do in this situation. I guess I'll leave it alone for now. I'll be towing the camper again in about 3 weeks and if it throws a code again, new coils, plugs and wires will be going in. Thanks
