My 73 f250 has a very rusty cab. I just got a title for it and the only thing with a vin number to match my title is the door jamb sticker. I was planning on fixing the cab for this reason. I know there should be a vin on the frame but I wasn’t able to read it.
The more I look at my cab the more I realize how much work would need to be done just to get it solid again. If I replace the cab I would have the wrong vin on the truck which is a huge problem. What would you recommend?
I would definitely contact your DMV and find out exactly what you need to do in your situation before spending any more money...
When do I need an Iowa Assigned VIN for my salvage titled vehicle?
Salvage-titled vehicles are typically inspected by select local peace officers who are trained to conduct salvage inspections. However, if you also need an Iowa-assigned VIN number on your salvage vehicle due to the public VIN being removed, lost, or stolen, or because of a cab or frame change, one of our investigators will conduct the salvage inspection as well as a vehicle inspection to assign a new VIN number.
You can get repop aluminium Warrenty Plate and the correct rivets to install it on the dvrs door edge. You can also get a repop Safety Certificiation sticker (white sticker for the B pillar) from Marti Auto. Then take the bad cab off and put on the good one, then install your new tags on your new cab/door and B pillar. Not breaking any laws, the paper title vin goes to the frame anyway. They just put the tags on the body for easy reading.
Doors get swapped all the time and the Warrenty Plate gets forgotten to be moved with it.
You do know where the vin is stamped (in 2 places) on the frame correct? One is easy, one is real hard, but it you are swapping cabs it will be easy to see then. I would 100 % locate and figure out if the paper title matches the frame vin. What about the piece of paper and pencil lead trick to copy it?
