1996 F 250, 7.3, 210,000 miles. I have an intermittent issue with the overdrive switch on the gearshift lever. The switch activates randomly and sometimes I cannot get it to switch off or on. It is frustrating to be driving at 60 mp and all of a sudden go into 3d gear. I have read most of the posts that say there is a damaged wire somewhere along the way. I bought a new gearshift lever with a new switch already installed and replaced the old one. It did not solve the issue.
I have looked at the wires that I could see, but they are mostly in a bundle and not visible. I have no experience in electrical testing or trouble shooting, but I could learn with step by step instructions.
Some posts indicated possibly a new PCM was needed, are these easily available?
There is a diesel mechanic nearby that advertises OBS work but I’m not sure how much they know about this type of issue. I think most of these folks are good at HP upgrades, turbos, injectors, and such.
Anyway, …. Advice is appreciated.
Issue resolved. I ended up sending the PCM to Diesel Technologies of Chattanooga for testing. Tests indicated a faulty PCM so they sent me a rebuilt one. Turnaround time was great, I shipped my old unit out on Monday and received the new one on Thursday. Truck is back up and running. So far it seems to have solved the problem.
Hopefully this will help someone who has the same issue.
