Navigation. Cannot hear turn by turn voice

I have a 2013 F150 Limited which had Sync 2.
I bought an after market Sync 3 (sync 3.4) unit to replace the Sync 2. Everything works fine except the turn by turn voice. It doesn't matter if I use Ford maps or Android Auto I am unable to hear the turn by turn instructions over Bluetooth.
I've googled the problem and the only thing that is suggested (which works for most folks) is to turn off "use Bluetooth..." in the Android Auto setting on the phone. It's supposed to let you hear the turn by turn over your phone instead of the truck audio. This doesn't work for me.
I can say that if I'm listening to the radio while navigating I can hear the radio pause as if it letting navigation tell me something but I hear nothing.
Any suggestions on what to look for?
I'm using a Samsung S23+ phone with Android 15.

Have you tried turning up the volume while the nav. is talking to you? If the radio is cutting out that is when the person is talking.

Yes I've tried that. It's a bit tricky
I think I'm timing it right but it still doesn't help.

Which settings? Phone, android auto...?
When I connect the phone to the truck via usb it launches android auto. If I then look at the volume (phone\settings\sounds and vibration\volume), the media option is red (and shows the Bluetooth icon) and will not allow me to change it. Possible phone issue?
