Had one of my excursions keys stolen, and instead of re-keying the whole thing I was thinking of adding a push start in a hidden location.
If I just tie into whatever wire is always hot going into the switch, and cut the red/blue wire I can then just add a momentary switch I could put anywhere? So the system will still require a chip key, but turning the cylinder to start will do nothing. You would have to turn it to run and then know where I hid the switch. Anyone see an issue with that?
why bother? it's inelegant solution to a problem that you can rectify yourself fairly easily
if you still have 2 keys, pick up a 3rd PATS key. Reprogram it. This will erase the stolen key from vehicle PATS memory, leaving only the 3 current keys. Then reperform the clicker programming as well. Now the stolen key won't start the vehicle and the clicker won't unlock the doors. You can rekey the door lock if you really feel it necessary, but with how easy these are to break into...it's almost not worth it. Certainly less damaging than if a theif punches the door lock.
If you only have 1 key, buy another PATS key. Then use FORSCAN to program it yourself. This will also remove the stolen key from PATS memory.
either way, easy and roughly $20 solution to prevent stolen key from being used to steal the truck.
Oh ok I didn’t even consider that, thanks! Yeah I only have one and I don’t have a FOB, not that the electric locks work anyway lol. I’ll just go get another one and do that.
You can pay a locksmith to program the new PATS key for you. $50-150 typically

You can use FORSCAN with a laptop to program the key yourself. There are several guides on this site and at Forscan.org you can follow. It's pretty easy and cheap.
As for your locks, do the tinfoil repair. The lock mechanism has a resistor that fails over time. You pop it out, wrap in foil and the electric locks start working again. I've done it several times on various Fords. Free besides the time involved and a few zip ties.
DIY Tinfoil Lock Repair
Once the locks work by using the door button, you can grab cheap remotes off Amazon or eBay. programming them only needs 1 key. Cycle ignition on (not running) to off. 8 times. leave in On at 8th cycle. Door locks will cycle. Then press any key on the clicker. locks will cycle. click any key on any remaining clickers. When done, key to Off.
Well I screwed that up. Went and had another key made, and followed what my solus said to do and erase the 2 saved keys and add 2. I didn’t consider that I only have 1 key electrically… oops.
So is there a way to unprogram the keys I have or do I need to buy two more without a program and add those?
Definitely going to try the aluminum foil trick after I get it running again. On the plus side, definitely can’t steal it now! 😂
And while we’re on the subject, this excursion is a twice blown up 5.4 2wd, I’ve got an 06 6.0 350 4wd that I plan on swapping the whole drivetrain. I assumed I could just pull all the modules from the 350 and toss them in the ex, body control may be an issue, but I hadn’t considered the security. So when we do that, or even now, can I just bypass the PATS somehow? PATS delete if you like.

I bought a $5 FOB from eBay and it works just fine,
the only problem with it, is the Range is very short...
about 20 feet max....
unlike the Ford which will work for at least 100 feet.
