Engine Oil Drain Plug
Engine Oil Drain Plug
I need to replace a leaking drain plug and gasket on my 1953 8RT 239 flathead V8. I would like to pull the old one and immediately insert the new one, with minimum oil loss. Can anyone tell me where I can buy and exact replacement plug? What size and pitch thread does the standard oil pan take? Thanks.
Just drain the oil into a clean receptacle and reinstall. The drain hole is way to large to get creative IMHO.
Assuming you have a real truck engine with truck oil pan, the plug is Ford part8HA-6730 and is 7/8-16 thread B-6730 and has 3/4-24 thread. Specialty vendors will have options under that part number. For your local parts chain, they may have a Dorman 090-018 in stock that you can get today instead of waiting on a mail order from one of the specialty vendors.

I've had to pull the drain plug on a car with 7 qt pan, because I forgot the seal washer
. I just had my thumb ready and covered the hole, while I used the other hand to put the washer on the plug and do a quick swap. I don't think I lost more than a tablespoon of oil.

I did not replace the washer on my last oil change and apparently I should have. But I am not sure what diameter to buy without the plug in hand. So I thought I would just swap in all new.
I’m a bit confused. You have lined out “8HA-6730 and is 7/8-16 thread B-“ leaving 6730 with a 3/4-24 thread. Does this mean that a 3/4-24 thread is correct? Also lined out is the 090-018 following the Dorman plug. Does this mean that I need another designation for the Dorman plug? Thanks.
Art, I initially gave part numbers and only after posting realized that your specific ask was for 53 which turned out to have a change and so I crossed out the mistaken information and added the correct information.
For your 1953, it should be B-6730 with 3/4-24 threads. I don't immediately have a Dorman equivalent number to share.
