Has anyone mounted the stn. stl. grill trim to a 48-50 F1 with out drilling into the grill. Thinking 3M tape, but can't get anyone to show a picture of the back side. Hard to convince myself to wreck a nicely painted grill.
Thanks for any input.
Bob
Drilling holes for trim retainers will not wreck the grille. These trucks look great with the stainless grille trim and once the holes are drilled and the trim installed, you'll never take it off again. If some subsequent owner wants to remove it, there are plenty of grilles out there, stock and reproduction, they can paint and install to replace it, but your grille will still be there and perfectly good and useable with the trim in place.
The backside of the grille trim looks similar to the hood side, with the wraparound top and bottom for the clips to slide into. You'd have to use multiple layers of tape to bring the thickness out far enough to stick, and that's a point of potential failure. Drill the holes, be done and drive away with confidence.
I put original 1948 SS on my 1949 and much prefer it. The outer end holes will need to be oval shaped to work with original clips. I chose to eliminate the parking lights and the ss trim with the crank hole.
Here's a picture I took of an original grill I had. I wouldn't want to take a chance with depending on double sided tape to hold the strips to my grill. Just inmagine hitting a bump in the road or going over a railroad tracks and hearing something going under you front wheels and seeing the twisted up strip in the middle of the road.
Thanks for the comments guys. Guess I'm drilling. It needs a little shine in the front. It was suggested when I posted pics of the completed truck, but are they ever really completed?
I think a little chrome on the front of your truck would really set it off.
I have a set of SS trim I bought at a swap meet a couple of years ago. Like you, I've been hesitant about drilling the holes. Part of my problem is that I don't like the hardware that came with the trim kit and I've been too lazy to source a set of original trim clips (actually I think I have some buried in the shed but it might be easier to buy new.....lol)
