Bed Step Bent My Bumper???

When I ordered my 2022 F-250 I added the OEM bed step, which turns out to be made by Amp Research. The other day I noticed the bumper is slightly bent on one side, no idea how long it's been like that. So I crawled under and found the bumper step arm is bolted to the bumper, not the frame. The only thing I can figure is that using the step literally bent the bumper. Now, I know what you're thinking and I'll admit I could stand to lose a few, but 210 pounds isn't too crazy for someone who drives a truck, is it? This seems like it's mostly cosmetic, but I'm curious if any of you guys have seen this before, and know of any fixes. Seems like a better designed step would be mounted to the frame, instead of the bumper.

My 22 is the same. When I ordered the truck I also ordered the step and my bumper is lower on that side. I believe that when they installed the step they didn’t support the bumper and it sagged during the install.

I haven’t gotten around to adjusting it back up. It’s on the list.

ITs this thing called leverage. Does ya in every time. Whats strange is that its bending it opposite the way I would expect it to. It looks like if you put weight on it when it is out, its pulling the back of the shell down, I would expect it to pull the back up. Where is it attached, in the rear?

The structure of the bumper is actually rather flimsy, it has a brace to support the outer end of the shell, and thats twisting on you.

Interesting. I just crawled under to take another look, and the bracket for the step arm actually does bolt to the frame, using one of the bumper to frame bolts in that area. Doesn't look like you'd have to loosen all the bumper bolts to install it, but I could be wrong.

Yup, I'm totally confused now. See pic in previous post.

Mine looks about the same as yours:

If you look up from below there is more than the one mounting bolt you show:

My mounting bolt here is the same as yours:

But if you look up there are more mounting bolts with witness marks:

My basic plan is to just loosen them and lift the bumper back in place gently with a jack. I wish I would have caught it earlier. I would have had the dealer fix that too when I had them realign the rear doors on my suoer cab.

The thing is, it doesn't look pulled down, but actually twisted, and in the opposite direction than it should have twisted. I have to say though, having R&R these bumpers, there are so many adjustments to make, its probably just installed incorrectly and needs to be realigned. I doubt it bent anything, just wasn't installed properly aligned.

Thanks Bob, that's super helpful info! I didn't look close enough to see if there were any witness marks, but I'll do that. Then I'll have to decide if I trust myself not to make it worse! LOL

The only ones I am planning on loosening are the ones with the witness marks that involve the step. And giving it a nudge with a jack as I will be doing it solo and my back is shot. No sense involving other adjustment points and likely making matters worse.

The jack is another good idea, thanks again!

They have came out of alignment across different makes for as long as I can remember, around the time when 3 piece bumpers came out.

The jack/2x4 method works fine. I don’t even loosen the bolts.
