Exclamation DCR vs CP3 Conversion CP4 failure fixes

Some interesting thoughts:
As far as reliability I don't think their is much difference between the DCR and CP3, they are both very reliable pumps.
One very interesting advantage to the CP3 conversion is widespread availability and relieved torque on the pressed on Crankshaft gear due to the removal of a gear driven pump. Lastly since the CP3 is belt driven no need to time the pump as the CP3 has 3 pistons creating a more constant supply of fuel. Another advantage, should the pump fail replacing the CP3 pump is as easy as changing out an alternator vs the DCR which requires removal of the intakes, piping and vacuum pump which is about an 8hr job.

Just my thoughts and by the way I have a DCR installed

I would like to see some more information regarding the idler shaft setup that holds the vacuum pump gear. I'm sure it has bearings on it. How are they lubricated and cooled? What happens if a bearing on that thing fails? Are they readily available bearings? My truck has a DCR also and I think just doing that removes stress from the gear train. The DCR spins MUCH easier than the CP4.

I don't disagree that the belt driven CP3 will be easier to replace but in my opinion the reality is 90% of people won't be doing that job on the side of the road regardless so I don't see this point as a huge benefit at least in my opinion. Also looking around at S&S's dealer network you could probably have a pump the next day if needed.

the cp3 is not any better than the cp4

I had the cp3 in my prior 6.4 and there was always metal dust in the fuel filter

internet threads were full of failed cp3 fuel systems

its a forgotton fuel pump for sure...meaning most have forgotton how bad it is

no dpk option for the cp3, by nature of its design, no one could build a dpk for it......and thats why I got rid of my prior truck and bought a 6.7 so I can install a dpk on it.

putting a cp3 in your 6.7 is going back wards

and if you have dual alternators...your going to have to give up one of them.

nice gimmick though....would be a better gimmick to pitch some kind of cummings fuel pump

What kit did you use to replace the K16 with a CP3?

Inquiring minds want to know... And BTW the CP3 pump was a rock solid reliable pump.

My good sir, the 6.4 power stroke never had a CP3 from the factory. Not sure how you could retrofit on in since the K16 pump was on the back of the engine. The K16 DOES have a reputation for failing like a CP4 showering the high and low pressure system with doom glitter. CP3s do fail but usually don't take the entire fuel system with them.

CP3 is an excellent pump, that said in OEM form it can't make the pressures a CP4 can. Not saying the CP4 is remotely as good as the CP3 but this is one thing it can do out the box the CP3 couldn't. They reference an exergy pump with the kit and maybe the pulley is running the CP3 a little fast to compensate? Just spit balling.

I do have a soft spot for the CP3, it was great in my 04.5 CR cummins back in the day.
