I was reading about a Saginaw power-steering pump conversion for some Ford trucks, and I got to wondering: Can an '81 (or any of the 80s models, for that matter) be converted over to this pump, or is it going to require a lot of fabrication work?
the saginaw was the other option on the E/F series if the CII was not used. I have not seen very many in the boneyard so cannot tell you if the bracketry is the same.
according to the 81 shop manual I have (ford) saginaw was very much alive that year.
From what I read, it was because their original pump was loud and wore out. Mine is neither loud or worn out, but I'm just curious if these conversions apply to my model year, for future reference.
Jeez, Stan, give the guy the third degree why don't ya? I think that's what he's doing; he's
researching things on his own and asking questions here, tryin' to determine if this is a good
idea for him.
'CII' (as in Cee- eye-eye) is the nomenclature used for the ford integral pump. I have no idea why it is referred to that and not just simply 'Bob' or 'He who pumps the oil'.
I did notice today when I drove my truck (after replacing the steering box....and PS pump too, due to me accidentally removing the large fitting from the pump, instead of just the small hose that hooks to it...whoops), the power steering effect was a little diminished at very low RPM, but then again, my truck sat for a month undriven, and it wasn't running its best today. As soon as I brought the RPM up a little bit, it functioned perfectly.
If I were you I would first find out why some trucks need a saginaw pump. Do some research before asking questions like this.
Wow Stosh, was that really neccesary? From reading this post, it looks like TheKirbyMan is actually trying to do some research. What better place to research Ford trucks than this forum? I think you are forgetting what it is like to be new at this game.
TheKirbyMan, don't let that GROUCH discourage you from asking questions. Most of us like to help. How Stosh got to be "Postmaster" is anybody's guess.
Why do you ask? Does your current PS pump need replacing? Do you plan to use your truck for heavy duty work?
I do not know the answer to your question, but I am going to keep checking this thread and perhaps I may learn something. I do know that some early trucks did have the Saginaw PS pump, and that they are a heavy duty pump. I can say that my F150 and most trucks I have seen has the regular PS pump, and mine has lasted me 24 years and seems to be working just fine.
I do appreciate all the help and knowledge you guys have shared on this forum. I've asked several questions, and every time, people reply and I learn something new.
I asked mainly out of curiosity. I just replaced my PS pump (as a result of a mistake I made when swapping out a leaking steering gearbox) with one I pulled from an '84 several years ago, and it's working great, but in the future, if I ever need to replace the pump again, I want to know if the Saginaw conversion is a feasible option. And I don't plan to do anything really heavy with my truck, but if I was going to replace the old pump anyway, why not get something a little more powerful?
And I found out about this conversion somewhere online, not sure where; it was mainly on the 90s trucks that people were swapping in Saginaw pumps to replace worn out factory pumps. They used some Ford van parts, like the mounting bracket, and some older truck parts, like the high-pressure PS line for a 76-79 truck or something like that. In some cases it was a bolt-in job, other times I think it required some custom work.
BTW, does anyone know where I could find the specs of the factory CII pump? Things like output pressure, fluid type requirement, etc.? I use just plain old PS fluid and it works with no problems, but I just want to know more about it.

your personal attacks are starting to get aggravating.
leave the forums if you don't have anything better to do other than find a reason to be a GROUCH about Stans mistakes.
he is a POSTMASTER because he has helped this forum board out MORE than you ever have, or will.
we all appreciate Stans advice, you and Jesse Ault are the only ones finding reasons to start fights.
