Which intake manifold gaskets have you had the best luck with,
I am running afr185 heads and a edlebrock performer rpm intake and I am not having much luck with the intake staying sealed to the heads.
So I would like to know what your experiences are and what worked for you
Most of the time on an engine where there's water going through the gasket I've had the best luck with a gasket that has a steel core. A stock replacement gasket if it will fit the ports is the best. But something like the Fel Pro that have the "S" suffix in the part number seem to be ok. Cometic makes some gaskets that are not cut from that black fiber stuff but a different material that's much tougher. Those can work well too. In a situation where the intake is dry the high performance gaskets seem to hold up better.
Thanks for the reply
the issue i am having is not water port related, it is keeping the intake ports themselves sealed. I have tried 3 different types of gaskets (all have been Felpro gaskets) i am currently running the reinforced 1262 set. And the same thing keeps happening they lose thier seal and sucks oil from under the intake.
i do have a set of cometic gaskets ordered, they should be here today.
I have read alot about this on the internet, it seems to be a fairly common problem. But so many either give up or they just don't say what they did to solve the problem
The water causes them to get mushy and move around over time, sort of squish out.
I've had a similar problem on a 289 one time and the problem was with the intake manifold. It was not machined correctly and it was tight at the top and loose at the bottom which caused it to suck oil into the ports. A Ford like that is easy to check because the intake faces are 90 degrees apart. A square can be used to check the intake just to make sure while it is off of the engine.
Another thing to check would be to make sure that the intake can sit down solidly against the intake face of the head without interfering with the bolts. Even though they go straight down this can sometimes happen.
How long after new gasket does it start, have you attempted retorquing after a few heat cycles? My water pump/timing cover gasket would weep after first install, and kept retorquing, a few times it finally stopped.
I don't know exactly when it starts, it seems like after a couple of good pulls.
yes this last time I retorque it several times, until it quit tighting up.
I would think the two gasket surfaces are not parallel to each other and until they are, then it will always be an issue. I understand that gaskets are there to take up minor clearance issues, but if you got to tighten the manifold up multiple times, something ain't right.
I agree something is not right. All of the parts are new (i know not does not mean good anymore).
the gasket mating surfaces are nice and flat i did check that. Before removing the intake again i am going to run a borescope down the intake runners and see if that gives any clue as to what is happening
Flat probably is not the issue. The gasket surfaces are probably not parallel with each other. The gasket can only crush so much and if the angles are not the same, all that tightening would not help. Gaskets can probably handle slight differences. Sealer is just a band aide.
dumb question here, yet something i ran into in a similar issue, sucking oil in from the valley,
the fix was matching the gasket to the aftermarket head and intake port which in my case was edelbrock to match the 2.10 in. x 1.28 in. Port
Upon further research and pulling the intake off to reseal. I now do not think it was the intake leaking and causing the oil consumption. The heads I am using the intake rockers studs are threaded into the intake runners. I did not check this and assumed they where blind holes. Thread sealer must be used when installing these studs.
when I received these heads I didn't get any paperwork with them, but if you go to afr's website this information is there.
I did remove the studs and reinstall using thread sealer. Hopefully this solves the problem.
Thanks for the responses
thank you for that post, it's going to help others by reminding people to fully read the instructions. self included . since i use mostly edelbrock sets which are fully assembled,
