AC not very cold

For 1993 F250... I figured the charge must be low so I bought a can at the parts store with the gauge on it. With the controls on max, what I found was that it didn't exactly look low, but it cycled on/off every 3 seconds or so and covered the whole green range of the gauge, like all the way to the top, then cycled off and quickly dropped to the bottom, repeat. Probably obvious, but my understanding of how these AC systems work is pretty limited. Any thoughts?

the gauge on a can is useless.
if it is still cycling, it may be low........or pressure too high. only way to know is with a manifold set to see both high AND low pressures.

I have some luck with the little low-pressure gauge on the can, but that only goes so far, and isn't very accurate.

@tjc transport is right: Need to see both sides to do much diagnosis and to get the pressures right.
