The ground wire is pin 38 on the PCM. The PCM supplies +12v all the time to the solenoid. It turns the solenoid on and off by making or breaking the ground on pin 38.
I probed pin 38 and connected to the chassis ground next to the battery and got OL. PCM was unplugged and trans solenoid was plugged in. Is that the correct procedure?
Yes, that is the proper procedure. You do not have a short to ground. Now do the same thing, except go to +12V instead of ground. That will check for short to power.
