I have a 1992 f-150 with a 4.0 liter engine and overdrive trans. The problem I have is that about six months ago, I sent the electronic trans and had it overhauled, now it wont come out of first gear, and the engine lite comes on. I like to do most of my repairs, but I dont know how to access the codes. This code could be the problem of my trans. The manuel I bought from Autozone is not very clear because it covers too many years. The question:"is there a way for me to access the codes without a diagnostic machine, or hand held scanner". I have checked the connections at the trans and all seem fine. The engine is running fine, and also since I installed the trans, I have a whinning noise coming from the back of the truck. I dont know what this noise is, but it changes when put in reverse or in drive. The truck ran fine for about six months and it had this noise. But now I question this noise if it could be cause of my problems. Any comments are most welcomed.

There's a way to pull codes by using a jumper wire on the diagnostic terminal and then counting the flashing MIL light. I'll see if I can find the instructions for you...
