Hey all, I've encountered a bit of a hiccup in my engine assembly. The machine shop helped me get the engine components, but I've tried 2 different oil pickup screens and they say that's all they have to offer...
The oil pan is coming from a 1983 f250 so it's a rear sump. The engine is a 1978 460. This engine is going into an 83 f250.
I've tried the melling m84-ds1 and m84-ds2. Neither fit. The oil pan sits a couple inches off from seating. I've seen there are some straight oil pickup screens, should I try for one of those? Both of these pickup screens bolted to the third main cap.
The oil pump I have on it is the melling m84d
Also, I'm swapping out my flywheel since this 460 came from a Lincoln. What's your opinion on the speed master flywheels?
I'm pretty positive, this is a rear sump oil pan with a dipstick. This came off of the 1983 460 that was bolted to the truck. The oil pan I had with my engine originally is a 1978 front sump from a Lincoln. I cannot use that one since the truck it's going into is a 4x4. I triple verified that indeed a 460 was in this truck since I bought it without the engine. The vin and details under the hood show me a 7.5L 460 engine was in there paired up to an NP435 Transmission, and no I wasn't putting it on backwards either lol.. I really have second gussed my self on this, but it really is stumping me. From my research apparently the right p/n is E4TZ-6622-A but I am unable to find that.
If you look at jeffs bronco graveyard they have a sump and a oil pickup that is more straight than the melling pickups. The m84 DS1 and M84 DS2 both bolted to the third maincap on my block. I went and picked up both models because I thought I was going crazy. I was told this is the only one for your engine, but I find conflicting sources stating that the right one should bolt to the 4th main cap. https://shop.broncograveyard.com/460...uctinfo/30193/
look at this ebay listing for an example. I also did a screen grab of the M84 DS1 and M84 DS2. Those Curves are hitting the rear sump, the DS2 hit the rear sump pan, and the DS1 was hitting the middle of the pan.
The oil pan in those listings look exactly like mine, I measured the depth of the rear sump pan in mine and it is roughly 8.75"
I also snagged a pic of a engine from another FTE Post, if you notice there, on that 1983 block, it has the oil pickup screen on the 4th main cap stud, not the third. Idk, I cannot find the rear sump pickup by itself, I may just have to spend the extra 200 and buy the Bronco graveyard one. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...s-correct.html
I also saw the rock auto for that truck year and it also suggested the Melling pick-up screen. However everywhere I'm reading for the rear sump oil pan, in order for it to fit, it needs to bold onto the 4th main cap. I have bought both of those, and mounted them. They only fit on the third, and hit the bottom of my pan.
I also got skeptical on if I have the right oil pump since nothing is meshing, but the pump I have is the Melling M-84D and that should also be the correct pump.
Has the OP called Melling ? It's not like they are some no name company. I'm sure your not the first person to do this. They must have some input. Unless you have the wrong parts ?
But I would think any Tech Support at Summit or Jeg's, could also help.
I see in the related threads below, something about van or truck pans...
