all my truck does for 22 years is pull my camper. What ever the truck came with, it has, I forget. 2001 Woods rebuilt transmission 2003. Diode issue
10klbs camper. Only seen it hit 180 a couple times with add on temp gauge. Never seen 200. usually it will run around 160-175.

Edit,, Just ran out and looked, Haven't seen it in years . Lines run to radiator then cooler or reverse. The cooler is about 75% the size of the radiator. . Nestled in there between condenser and radiator. hard to see it.

Dan reports having a 2001 model year 7.3L that as of today he reports still has "whatever the truck came with" as far as transmission coolers.

Long Manufacturing did not supply any 6.0L coolers to Ford until the 2003.25 model year, therefore it wasn't possible for the 2001 truck to have come with a 6.0L transmission cooler.

However, it was possible for the 2001 truck to have come with a cooler in the radiator, along with an oil to air cooler, as Ford began installing both coolers in Super Duties in calendar year 2000, when model year 2001 trucks were being built.

Now, if Dan or his father purchased the 2001 used, after 2004, then the possibility arises that the oil to air cooler isn't what the "truck came with", but rather is what the truck was modified with prior to Dan's possession.

That would be instructive to see, and can be easily determined by just looking for the lines entering and exiting the oil to air (OTA) transmission cooler.

If the supply and return lines to the OTA come in and out at the bottom of the heat exchanger, then it would be more likely something other than what the truck originally came with.

If the supply and return lines to the OTA come in and out at the top of the OTA transmission cooler (the rubber "tool tray" surrounding the hood latch can be popped off to see this), then Dan has the original design OTA cooler that the truck came with.

Ford began installing the radiator cooler in February, 2000, while the 2000 model year trucks were still in production.

not if he says this..."The cooler is about 75% the size of the radiator". Is it possible he bought the truck used and someone else had already installed a 6.0 cooler
maybe if he said the cooler was about 1/4 the size of the radiator

Previous owners, Older friends of our at the time. had truck for 2 or 3 years. 2001. Think it has a build date of 10/2000. To pull their camper.
They hated dealing with camper and decided against it and bought motorhome, During that time, The Transmission was rebuilt by woods. Diode issue or other.
I never could keep my eyes off the truck, So I offered to buy it when they had enough.
I have had it ever since.
I never added cooler, Never needed to. I highly doubt who ever dealt with transmission added the cooler so I would bet a beer that it is factory.
Very difficult to access in front of the radiator and behind the intercooler. Wedged in there.
It consumes 75% of the radiator for sure.. Appears factory pre-bent lines and hoses.

Best cooler set up I ever had in any truck that have ever owned. Its the way to go, For sure.

@danskool appears to be describing his charge air cooler (intercooler) as a "transmission cooler", as surmised from his first top view photo and description presented above.

The charge air cooler is roughly 70% of the radiator, so the verbal description of size more or less matches the heat exchanger shown in the photo, but the heat exchanger shown in the photo does not appear to be the oil to air transmission cooler. It looks like the intercooler instead.

The OEM 7.3L oil to air transmission cooler sits underneath the charge air cooler. The output of the oil to water transmission cooler heading upward, and the lack of plumbing into the bottom of the oil to air heat exchanger, as shown in the 4th and final photo, are all indications that the original 7.3L oil to air cooler is in use, where the lines enter and exit at the top of that exchanger, not visible due to the oblique angle with which danskool shot the first top photo.

With the rubber tool tray removed, one has to look straight down to the ground through the gap between the AC condenser and the Charge Air Cooler, with the benefit of a flashlight pointing down into the abyss. There one will see the original style oil to air transmission cooler, that is plumbed from the top of the OTA cooler, but since the cooler is so short in height, the lines themselves are not visible unless peering down from above, with the gap illuminated.

Danskool used a light to aid in peering through that gap from below, and no lines are visible to the OTA cooler... only the oil to water cooler. Since the 6.0L OTA coolers are plumbed from the bottom, instead of the top, we would have seen at least one hose and fitting from the bottom, based on the angle that the bottom up gap photo was taken.

Therefore, this all suggests that danskool is running the original equipment stock design oil to air transmission fluid cooler, just like he said.

It definitely appears that way, doesn't it...you win, I surrender .

I find it interesting how well his temps do on factory setup....I don't recall that experience, great for him though
