THIRD Transmission cooler?

Hi. So last summer I installed a second (or third, if you consider the radiator a transmission cooler) cooler inline with the other cooler(s). I didn't bother installing a temperature sensor until yesterday. Today I was watching it as I drove around town and it was slowly climbing and it finally hit about 210-220 and it stayed there. Now, that would seem normal to me with the stock cooler (this is a 2003 F250 with a 7.3 and 4R100), but with the biggest cooler that Hayden makes, that seems hot as ****. So, should I install yet another cooler? Or is something else going on here?

P.S. I installed the sender in the test port where everyone else does.

Any help is appreciated.

First off installing two coolers together is too much resistence and its possible that it isnt even going through the coolers but is being bypassed instead. Get rid of both coolers and install a 6.0 tranny cooler in there place. Use the search feature on this site for lots of good info on the 6.0 cooler.

I think THIS THREAD has your answer. Three coolers are too restrictive.

Junk the two out front (the one in the radiator is a VERY effective cooler!) and replace them with a cooler from a 6.0L truck. That will eliminate ANY cooling problems.

Thanks! So does the 6.0 cooler fit where the stock cooler is on a 7.3?

My buddy just brought an interesting point up: could the transmission be slipping? It has 180k on it and I know it has overheated a few times. Thoughts on this?

The 6.0 trans cooler is about the size of your a/c condenser and it will go behind that. It is way bigger than what you have now...

The 6.0l cooler bolts to the same mounts as the stock cooler.

It is easy to determine if the trans is slipping. Pull out the dipstick. Is the fluid black and stinky? If it is then the trans is probably slipping. If not, then it definitely is not slipping.

I would just like to say thank you to everyone for helping me out. But, I have another question. Are there any coolers that are as effective as the 6.0 cooler, but a little cheaper? I've seen the B&M Supercoolers, TruCool Max, etc. any of these as good? I'm not too keen on spending $400 on a cooler.

Look around on craigslist for people parting out 6.0s, or go to a junkyard

In the thread that Mark linked you to it says Tousley ford is selling the 6.0 coolers for $280.00 In my opinion there is no equal to the 6.0 cooler and it mounts in the factory location which is a huge plus..

Oh! Awesome! I guess I should have read the thread more carefully! I do like the factory mounting part!

Do a search on here about the 6.0 coolers and how they mount. The 6.0 cooler will have 1/2" lines on it and your existing is 3/8" lines so there are a few things that you will have to adapt to make it work. If you would like to know how I did mine let me know..

So, I just had another thought. Do the pumps on these go out very often? I routed the fluid through the stock cooler today and drove around, and it still reached 220-230. Could the pump have failed or be failing?

That's pretty hot... I had an 03 f250 (only 5.4 though) and highest temp I saw was like 165* when it was 105* out

I completely agree. It's been 50-60 degrees here, and it just keeps running really hot.
