So i own a 1986 f150 , automatic , carburated. 4.9L straight six. And , it melted a solenoid yesterday. The starter solenoid at that , so i replaced it. thinking that would solve all my problems. No , I got stuck at a smoke shop in the parking lot as it blew the 2nd , brand new one. Only way I could get it home was with the classic screwdriver acrost the post method , but that uh KICKED MY STARTER into engagement the entire time i drove it home. It was a 2 mile drive home , and for the first half i could hear it whirring like all hell and see it just further cooking that solenoid as smoke pours out the hood..... IT stopped halfway through with a clunk , i thought it had stripped all the gears , ect. But no , it didnt. When i tinkered with it some more today , i found the custom push button wiring is sketched out and might not be giving good signal , so i went ahead and replaced that wire. 2ndly , The ground on the solenoid is *** and might be causing further issues , I dont want to buy another 50$ solenoid just for it to pop on me. Any ideas ?
I X2 what Max said, let see a picture of the relay and wires as we may spot something that is causing your problems.
What is this "push button" starter thing? Will the truck turn over / crank with this button when in a gear?
Have you looked into why the key will not work? There is another safety switch between the key and relay that may be out of adjustment or bad and why the key will not work or the IGN switch could be out of adjustment or bad too.
The relay on my 81 F100 w/300 six would not make contact all the time when the key was turned and all my battery cables were new but I pulled them all and cleaned connections.
Even the relay where it is bolted has to have a good ground to work right, it was worst after the cleaning.
I bought a top of the line NAPA relay and have not had any problems for years now.
