Hello, I recently purchased a 2003 Ranger and it might sound weird but it’s my first vehicle with a check engine light. The other day I noticed the light was on. Yesterday driving to Church I noticed that it didn’t respond well to low rpm acceleration and seemed to have a stuttering when rpm’s got about 2k. I stopped at the store and had them scan the truck. Said my cat needs replacement. Anyone have experience with what I’m describing that can advise me. I’m including the scan report which shows the truck information and report
2.3 with 266,000 miles for anyone who can't read the tiny text in the image.
What's the history of the vehicle? What maintenenance have you done on it since you got it?
Those two codes don't seem directly connected to the performance problems you described. The low RPM acceleration and the "stuttering". New spark plugs, wires, air filter, MAF sensor cleaning might fix both. Supply more info. Good luck.

Thank you for your reply … I have about 2k miles since I bought it … mostly freeway miles from West Tennessee to East Virginia . I did a new air cleaner and oil change when I bought it … I did notice what I thought was a little bit of sputtering when driving but had no trouble keeping up with traffic 70 mph, except long grades uphill then a downshift to 4th was necessary. I did purchase a new coil, plugs, and plug wires but haven’t had time to put them on yet. I’m in Virginia helping a friend get the house ready to sell and then move to Western Tennessee. The ranger will be going back on a trailer while I drive the truck. I am getting about 27 mpg freeway and 24 here in town. Just seems to bog a bit when shifting 1-2. But it could be me as my other truck I’ve been driving is a 302 with a 5 speed so maybe transitioning to a 4 cylinder and maybe I need to get more rpms between shifts ? Love the Truck and Gas mileage after the 302 4x4 F-150 …
A 2.3 liter is less than half the size of a 302 (5 liter).
If you don't know the maintenance history and haven't given it a look-over it seems early to do much before giving it a good tuneup. It has a ton of miles on it. Surprising it runs as well as you describe. Good luck.

Drove it today and had lots of issues getting it to go … seems like it was out of gas … fuel filter maybe ? Had a hard time getting it to move forward but would idle fine

so did some you tube video searches and so I went and bought some MAF spray and cleaned the sensor and changed the fuel filter … no change, idled but-no acceleration at all … back to you tube where a guy explained how the sensor works. I went back out and did another spray cleaning and then I pulled the neg battery cable as he said … to reset the computer, waited 15 + minutes and hooked it back, started the truck and it sounded great and had response … took it for a drive and I believe it’s now running better than when I got it .., Hopefully this holds and runs well
