Weird thing is to me is if it stays in 5th with the converter Locked up it stays cool, if it downshifts it heats up. That’s backwards of how I always thought it should be.
I have an 05 I recently started towing with. I have an SCT tuner and the canned tunes.
I haven't let it get over 1300*, and only for an instant when I wasn't paring attention, but I have noticed what you mention above.
I can be pulling a hill (towing 11k) and when it gets to 1100-1150 I want it to downshift. Well, theres no way to manually disengage OD on my truck so I either back off or stab the throttle a bit to get it to downshift. This gets me about a 900 rpm gain and increased EGT's. I have to slow down a bit (to 55-60) and let the EGTs settle down.
I believe it is both down shifting and unlocking the converter at the same time, netting the 900 rpm gain. Typically from 1900 rpm to 2800 rpm.
I know that while accelerating through the gears I will be reading 1900, 2200, and 2800 respectively at that speed depending upon what gear or converter status is.
I haven't came up with a fix, but I was planning on addressing the shifts with some custom tunes.
I did try stock, tow, and aggressive shift options on the sct, no change.
