How do I reprogram factory keyless entry code?

I need to change the factory keyless entry code on my '98 Explorer.

Is this something I or the dealer can do?

The factory code is on a module, inside the area where the jack is kept. The module is FORWARD of the wheel well, so it's very hard to see. It's a 5-digit code, in type larger than the other numbers on the module. Once you have that, you can use the code to enter you own personal code (the code on the module is permanent and will always work). Your owner's manual will tell you how to enter your own code.

Thanks, but I'm looking to CHANGE the FACTORY keyless entry code. This code is in the wrong hands and I need it modified.

Can this be done without getting the dealership involved?

Maybe.

It's not an Explorer, but the procedure might work just the same. It's worth a shot, right? Open everything up and see what you're working with. If it's the same, follow the procedure. If not, get yourself an after-market alarm system with keyless entry (do-it-yourself for under a hundred bucks from crutchfield.com) and then unhook your keyless entry system altogether. That should do the trick.

Good luck!

Yes, as I remember, Owner's manual has some information about changing factory code for keyless entry. If you don't have one, Ford owner's manuals are available on-line at www.qualitycareservice.com , free of charge (but only for vehicles produced after 1996).

Good luck,
Yuri,

I don't believe that you can change the factory code without getting the dealer involved. It is "burned" into the ECU.

What the owner's manual talks about is adding a second personal code. It mentions speifically that it will not over write the factory code.

Keep in mind also, if you enter your own personal code, any time, and I mean any time the battery goes dead, is unhooked, whatever, that personal code is lost and system reverts to factory. I got so tired of reminding the wife of the original I made her memorize the factory code.....
