Installing OEM Trailer TPMS

I'm interested in getting input from anyone who has experience installing or operating Ford's OEM TPPM for pulled trailers.

I am pulling a 26-ft travel trailer and the ability to get tire pressure and temperature alarms should be a worthwhile safety feature.

I've looked at other trailer TPMS systems but they don't work with CarPlay and I prefer not to have more than 3 "screens" to monitor while driving.

Input appreciated. -- MJP

Thank you, FDNYL136...Did you do the installation yourself, or did you engage a dealer / tech?

I have the factory TPMS and camera on my travel trailer. I have access to a tire machine and installed them myself. Pretty simple.

I bought mine on Facebook marketplace and got a great deal. They were for an older generation but plugged right in and worked perfectly. I had discount tire put the tpms stems in the tires, then I programmed them in the parking lot. I got the harness with the camera and yaw sensor as well. I haven’t once used the YAW sensor, but love the camera and TPMS. It would be nice if the yaw sensor automatically came up as a jackknife detector in reverse or something. I think I might have to use the backup assist or something to get anything out of it.

Addendum: It programs by changing the air pressure, btw. Better to go too high with pressure, then let some out for programming. Otherwise you’re adding air to program and it takes longer. You can find instructions out there, just follow them with that caveat. It’s simple and is done with menus on the dash.

@MJPersonal Welcome to the forum. Add your truck MY, model, trim, and any other info that you want, to your signature so folks know if they can help with your model year. I have the TPMS on my 23 and it is easy to install, and I had my RV repair shop install the sensors. There is a screen in the center of the dash that displays the pressure and temp when the trailer is hooked up and you can set the alarm level to alert you to low tire pressure. I highly suggest that your order a TPMS training tool from Amazon to make setting up the system much easier than the letting air out of the tires till the horn beeps method.

We had a 2019 and I installed the TPMS on our old trailer, had tire sensors installed with new tires. When we got a new trailer I pulled the harness off the old but left the TPMS wheel sensors. I purchased and installed the new sensors on the new trailer and this time also included the camera in 2022. We did it with tires spoons, aired down, broke the bead and installed the sensor. Fast forward to this year and another new truck. The old harness and sensors work with the new truck without a problem. Now I need to figure out how to add the yaw sensor to use the backup assist.

Yup, had it on my 19, and when the 23 came in, I never swapped the trailer tire sensors. Work just fine connected to the 23, and I can confirm the older sensors were/are also capable of providing temperature information. My 19 cluster could never display the tire temps, but those same 19 sensors are showing tire temp and PSI in the 23 cluster plain as day.

That's interesting, I don't get the temp on mine but I have no idea how old the sensors I bought are... got them off E-Bay for a fraction of the dealer price. At the time I didn't even know temp was a thing. I may have to upgrade to the more recent versions when I get new tires for the Fifth wheel.

It turns out that I'm not yet allowed to create a signature - evidently newbies have to earn that privilege .

Just a heads up for anyone thinking of doing this - I found out the hard way. Balancing beads in trailer tires are great for reducing tire wear, but they clog these Ford sensors. Appear to work great, but traveling down the road there are intermittent random tire pressure warnings. The offending tire sensor is indicated on the screen. The sensor/tire varies. The temperature reads fine so if that tire is about the same temperature as the other trailer tires you are not likely to be low on air. Going back to my reliable TSTtruck system.
