As soon as I start my 2000 3.0L Ranger in damp cold weather I hear a "clicking" sound. Once I get it warmed up the sound goes away all together. Any thoughts on causes or solutions? It's not really a problem for me but I just don't want it to be a signal of another problem....
How many miles do you have on it? Have you tried to isolate where the sound is coming from? Sounds like serpentine belt sound in the moisture, belt replacement usually cures the problem. Good luck.
I have about 37,000 on it. Had the serpentine belt replaced last spring because of it starting to show wear (and garage was willing to still do it under warranty). This is what I was figuring the problem is.
your truck might be kinda new for this, but may be your valves/rocker arms/lifters, if there is a gap between them somewhere, it will click, my 4.0 clicks like crazy if you open up the hood and listen for it, but otherwise, its really not noticable. Then when your engine warms up, the metal expands filling the gaps and no more clicking.
I'd check the belt first for cracks or missing pieces or strech marks, or anything unusual, then go from there
Hmmm, weird, mine does that too. When I start mine in the morning, I dont hear it at first but when Im coasting to the stop sign around the corner, I hear it everytime. Same exact noise every day. It does sound kinda like valve tapping, but I only got 68k on mine so I didnt think that would be it. Maybe I was wrong
In the days of solid lifter cams, you set a gap between the rocker and the valve. Did not cause any problems. Was a little noisy and you had to check it once in awhile.
I dont think there are any long term effects of the clicking if its caused by the spaces between the valve train as long as it goes away when it warms up, In fact the spaces are supposed to be there to make room for expanding metal. I suppose if they wore down it might hurt performance if it couldnt open the valves all the way, but that might be kinda unlikely, Is there anything im missing anyone?
