88 ranger starting problems

My sons ranger has the following symptoms: I get a clicking sound when trying to start, it will start with a jump but when the ranger is turned off it just clicks....what could this be? I would think if it were the starter or starter solinoid then even with a jump it wouldn't start...I put a new battery in yesterday?

could it be the alternater?

are you sure the new battery is good??Sounds bad to me if it starts with a jump.

If the new battery is ok, then I would check the battery cables
very carefully!!!!!

Get a volt meter and check the battery voltage. Should be about 12.5 or so with the truck off, and around 13.5 or 14 when running. If it's lower than that when it's running, you've probably got a bad alternator. Most parts shops will check them for free.
