2000 E-350 won't take freon

Hi everyone, charging my AC system for the trip. I was unable to get enough time away from work to repair the leak in the rear hose, I'll do that when I get back. So, like I did all last summer, I give it a can every now and then.

Today, the pressures were at zero, which I figured since the system has not been running since last fall. I pulled a vac for an hour. It will hold for about 20 min.

I put in 2 cans with the engine off, and they went in really quickly and I could see good movement in the sight glass on the gauges. The 3rd can started filling, but so far it's not emptied and it's been about 40 min or so. I started the van, compressor runs, vent thermometer gets to about 55 deg. It's 82 here today. I let the van run a good while, compressor runs the whole time (I'm in MAX mode) but I don't see any movement in the sight glass. Freon can is not cool to the touch. Low side pressure is about 95, Hi side pressure is about 200. No movement in gauges. The compressor is not cycling.

Normally this van with rear air should take 5 cans, but the third can doesn't seem to want to go into the system.

Any thoughts? Am I missing something?

Thank you,

Ben

low side pressure is WAY too high, and most likely shut off the pressure switch. 80 degrees you should see 50 low side and 210 high side tops.

I can concur that those pressures are normal for this van.

What causes the high pressures? Expansion valve? I only got just a bit over 2 cans in before this happened.

thanks,

Ben

i would look for a partial blockage in the low side.

The low side should run at 30-40 lbs
That will cycle the compressor
You either have a restriction or too much freon
I'd suck it back down again and check the fixed orifice
