Hey all, if this information is on the forum I’d love to be directed to it!
I have an 81 302 and c6 transmission 4wd. It’s too far gone to restore but the motor runs strong and I kind like it ratty. The transmission is slipping and I assume the only cost effective option is to put in a junkyard trans. I’m mechanically inclined and have done a decent amount of work on trucks but this will be new for me.
Actual Question: how do I know if a transmission (from various f150 model years) will bolt up/adapt and what do I need to take into account for driveshaft?
I'm not sure where you plan to get your salvage transmission. If there are any salvage yards that still handle parts for vehicles that old, they should have books to tell what years should work. Of course you will still have to compare some hookups.
I think the only thing that matters is it comes from a 4wd and maybe the bellhousing needs to be from same family engine.
So I think if you can find a c6 from a 4wd with the small block in it, it should be ok.
Someone else will chime in and correct or add more.

What he said, any transmission that fits a small block. 300 / 302 / 351, and for a 4x4 will work.
Now I dont know how much money you want to put into this truck but if you do the R&R and send the trans to a shop for them to rebuild this way you know you have a trans that will work.
Junk yard you still have to R&R but if it does not work you have to R&R and hope they have another that you can install and hope it works and think of all the AFT you use for the 2 trans.
I dont know what auto over drives that will bolt in maybe someone else knows?

I just had the C6 in my Bullnose truck rebuilt locally. I doubt there are any transmissions left in a salvage yard that wouldn't require a rebuild. I had my eye on a diesel F250 in a salvage yard near me that had a T19 but decided to have my automatic and VRV rebuilt.
Use this website if you're determined to find a salvage yard transmission. I actually found that Bullnose truck with a T19 using that site.
Thanks for the direction. Let’s be honest, most “salvage” options these days come off facebook marketplace….
i had no idea the 300, 302, and 351W had the same bell housing. That’s been super helpful. I am probably going to get this one rebuilt eventually but I am still browsing what pops up around me online.
Can someone verify. A guy on my street says I can remove the back end of a 2wd c6 and bolt my transfer case to it. Internet seems to saw the output shafts do not make this possible. Would this bolt up or would the internals have to be swapped/rebuilt making the point moot?
I would ask him to prove it as I also believe the output shafts are different between 4x4 & 4x2 transmission.
On 4x2 you have short / medium / long out put shafts.
I know the outputs are different for the GM TH350 / TH400 as I had to have a TH400 swapped from a AMC Jeep 4x4 to work in my AMC 4xx2 drag car years ago as they never put TH transmission in AMC cars.

A lot of work. A 2wd c6 has to be torn down all the way, and the rear shaft and housing have to be swapped to convert a 2wd to a 4x4 transmission.
I hope by now you have looked around your area for a transmission shop that has been around for many years. Have you talked to a repair shop/garage that has been in business for many years, they may know someone who can rebuild the old C6, Maybe call auto machine shops. What about race car shops, they may know who can rebuild it.
