I hate the ghosts under the hood. I had a rough running issue a while back. Went through everything twice... plugs looked good, changed fuel filter, rotor, cap, wires. Still the same thing. Grabbed the trusty temp gun and check each cylinder with running. #1 was cooler than the rest but not much.. pulled the plug wire off to see if it would get worse and I got shocked from a hairline crack in the porcelain of the plug.... I guess just enough to not get a full spark in the cylinder. Electricity is a deviant SOB... path of least resistance.

The fact that it has developed a tendency to run on after shut off could mean, lean running (fuel delivery), poor ignition, poor fuel quality, carbon build up in the heads (carbon glows when hot), etc. I suggest that you begin with basic trouble shooting: check plugs, wires, points if you have them); check all fuel filters, fuel lines (sometimes ethanol will ruin older style fuel lines), fuel pump, etc. if none of those revels anything obvious, you should have a closer look at the carb( idle air/fuel mixture, float level, etc.).

can't hear the noise, but if it is running on/dieseling after shut down, it's probably preignition....
