I have a 92 f250 D 7.3l Yesterday I developed a nasty clatter on startup. It sounds like a piece of metal vibrating against metal. Much clearer than lifter noise, I have no loss of power no smoking no rough idle. I seems to run fine but occasionaly it starts clacking. If I don't clatter on startup it won't make any noise until the next time I start it. It doesn't seem to be in the clutch, clutch opperation doesn't change it. any Ideas on what to check. I changed the oil and fuel filter last week. Could it be too light of a viscosity oil?
I am unfortunately ignorant about diesels and have never heard this kind of a noise on any vehicle I've owned.
what oil did you put back in it? The best type that I have found is 15W-40 DIESEL oil. You might be experiencing lifter bleed down if the oil is not heavy enough. Keep us posted.
my 93 7.3 is doing the same thing. it clatters for about 6 seconds on startup. it does not do it all the time. it seems to do it after it is warm and i turn it off and then start up again. it sounds to me like it is not getting enough fuel, because it sounds the same as if you are running out of gas right before you switch tanks. i do not put my foot on the gas when i start it up warm. i am stumped. use 15w-40.
gbeach,
You really using gas? No wonder it's clattering. Probably lots of black smoke also!!
Boy, did i ever get that drilled into my head growing up working in a truck yard! "It's FUEL" my boss/brother in law used to yell at me. shook me up so bad, i hardly ever use the "G" word anymore.
Most likely this is the problem. I am going to pull the starter tommorrow and check for a spring floating around. I pulled the dust cover and didn't find anything. No debris or anything, but the shop down the street said that they sometimes will bounce up inside the bell housing and get stuck. then the noise stops.
Does anyone run a solid flywheel instead of the torsion dampened ones. The price difference is about 800 bucks and if the only problem is increased gear noise I might use the solid one.
About oil I used 10w40 diesel oil don't remember what brand but I don't think I'll use it again.
