Hi guys. New guy here looking for info on a 1970 F-250. It is a 4x4, but the vin says 4x2?
Looks like it was born this way but, I know it can't be. It`s been sitting in a garage for many years and the girl selling it says it was her fathers.
He has MS and dementia, and she doesn't know much about it.
Not sure if it could have been swapped at a dealer or what? Any info would be greatly appreciated.
They are looking to sell this week but, I don't want to get stuck with a legal problem.
The simple answer is that body was put on a 4x4 chassis. Very common occurrence on the East Coast (I know I have done a couple). There is a VIN on the frame passenger side near the core support.
Take a look at it and see if it matches the cab (most likely not).
Truck looks great, if it runs and drives then it's worth what you are will to pay for it.
It is a Frankenstein truck. It is an August 1969 2wd F-250 body set on a 67-72 F-250 chassis, or converted to 4wd. 4wd's were never Camper Specials or got factory 390's. Check the frame vin under the right door for proof. https://www.fordification.com/tech/vin_find.htm
Thanks guys. Truck does not run but, she says it did. I`m going back to see if I can get it out of the garage and start it up. Hopefully today or tomorrow.
She`s ask $20K. Do you think it might be worth that? Not sure if it is a legal truck or not but here in CT you don't need to go thru inspection.
At least, I don't think so anymore?
The big thing is to get a TITLE! That is important, if it's not running then it's not a $20K truck. It would need to be turn key drive it home with no issues to be that kind of money! Now I agree it's not a $5K truck either, it looks like a real good truck but you need to go over it top to bottom. Look under it and verify that the underneath looks as good as the top. Look at the Brakes, Lines, Fuel Tank and Frame. And since it's got that plow hanging off the front, I would look at the front axle. If its a closed knuckle original that could be a source of more issues! The Frankenstein part of the truck doesn't concern me at all if the quality is there. These trucks are 50 plus years old, lots of things have been replaced or modified!
Hopefully I`ll find out today. I`m going back at 6:00. Going to try and get it going and out of the garage.
Oil looks good, tranny oil too. I`m sure it will be no problem getting it going.
Here`s the frame.
Based on those pictures, NOT A $20K truck at all! Not horrible, but I also see it is a 4x4 highboy frame with a 2 wheel drive body on it. I think you are more in the $10K range personally if it runs and drives. Based on the amount of surface rust present, I would say really look at the brake lines and to trailer it home depending how far you have to go?
Well, I spent another 2 hours looking this truck over last night, and I could not find a vin on the frame. I`m not sure what year the frame is?
Could it be stamped somewhere else besides the passenger side top frame rail by the alt and under the drivers side door?
These pics are by the alternator.
Another thing that stands out is that those are not the factory rivets holding the warranty tag to the door.
I did NOT notice that!? They do have a title and it looks good to me.
All the numbers are there. It was bought second hand in 1993 with 99K miles and the OD has 18K now.
I guess I will see if she takes my offer.
Not running, not driving, mis-matched frame and title, lots of chassis rust, not worth 20K. Not even 10K imho. Plow trucks are worked hard and typically put away wet. This one looks like they put a decent body on a rusty 4x4 frame. Does the title they have match anything? Or is it just a piece of paper. How much risk are you willing to get into, and what are you willing to pay for that risk? How bad do you really want this? The pop rivets on the vin plate was what I came here to mention, and it's been said already. Buyer beware.

Is there another location where the vin might be?
I read somewhere it might be in the glove box? I`m not sure but, could the guy have had it repainted and removed the tag and then replaced it with pop rivets?
Here are some pics of the bed.
