I recently installed a new serpentine belt on my truck now when I start the engine I get a short squeal from the PS pump, al.ost like it's stuck, lasts maybe 3 - 5 seconds. After I turn the wheel once or twice it goes away until I shut the engine off and restart it the same things happens hot or cold. Any suggestions? I don't want to just start changing parts without knowing what's going on. Thanks in advance.

reduce belt tension, slip belt off, then take your hand to the ps pump pulley and give it a yank in and out (toward and away from it)
Then try up and down, side to side. report what you notice, and by how much
Also, its a ford c2 pump, defective design, so theres a chance this will just be how it is even if you correct some other issue. but if it wasnt there before we should be able to
Ok i took the belt off and checked the pump. There isnt any play in it that I can detect. I forgot to mention that I have a Saginaw pump. Im not sure how freely the pump should turn, but it turns by hand but doesnt "spin"

i said to pull on the shaft not spin it
You have NO PLAY? in or out? then your pump is bound up internally
but saginaw is GOOD you should have only a small bit of "in and out" play , enough to move the pulley a few mm
After a little further investigation it turns out the noise is coming from the A/C Compressor. Why it would start when I changed the belt, and why it squeals when I turn the steering wheel i don't know, any suggestions?
Camper 357, it's been a while since I did the pump, maybe 10+ years. I belive the belt is a little shorter than stock, there was a thread with I fo on doing the swap
I recommend swapping in the correct size belt it should be a 102" and 9/16".
The other thing you can check is the tensioner, squealing on startup is a symptom of the tensioner having some issues. I would see if you can rotate the tensioner counterclockwise to take tension off the belt, you should be able to rotate smoothly but there will be tension on it. I bought some spray grease and shoot it into the internals of mine every so often.
Another thing I would look into is seeing if all the pulleys are aligned, it is within the realm of possibility that hardware has become loose over time. You can check this with a square and a straight edge.
As for the squeal when turning I would say incorrect belt tension and size are to blame, if neither of those fix it then I would chalk it up the pump itself.
I don't know about the compressor, I have very little experience with AC and the compressor.

its more likely to do with a phenomenon called pilling or its related to the tensioner or the pulley on the idlers
I would like you to send some pictures of your belt drive, and to describe the force of hte swing back on the tensioner, if you can send a pic of decent quality of the grooves on the AC comp,ps pump, Crankshaft, and alternator, that would greatly help.
