Another question I guess I should ask while I'm here anyway is, in my '85 I have an interesting issue where I lose my power steering entirely if I splash through a puddle.
It only happens when I hit a large collection of water, and it comes back after a few seconds. The really bad part is, it usually happens when I'm leaving or entering my neighborhood, and I'm typically TURNING when it happens (or at least trying to...).
My thoughts are, that the belt starts slipping when it gets wet... but the more I think about it, I start wondering if maybe there's something else going on here.
Seems to me that there shouldn't be THAT much resistance in the P/S pump that the belt would slip enough to completely stop spinning the pulley... Am I incorrect in this conclusion? Could it be so simple as just a slippery belt? Or is there a larger underlying problem I should look into?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions you guys might have.
It's just the belt, it takes a pretty good amount of force to operate the power steering pump, and you probably need to tighten or replace that belt. Check the backside of it for shinyness.
